First time here. My son has waist length hair that gets a trim every year. This year we decided to keep it local instead of going downtown and this place was the only place that took walk ins (as it was a little last minute) $40 for the trim, blow out and style. I didn't get the name of the gentleman who did the cut but he was exceptional. Professional, skillful and kind. We did have a language barrier but the owner translated for us which is just as good. Will be back here exclusively now. Thanks!

Early in the pandemic, I decided to grow a beard. Since no skill other than waiting was required, I did it rather well. The question then became what to do with it. The Danforth Barber Shop – run, interestingly enough, by a guy named Dan - really is a man-cave. It’s located in the basement, and as I walked down the stairs, I began to smile. Here were the traditional barber’s chairs, rows of polished electric trimmers, ebony handled straight razors, shelves of oils and after-shaves, a leather-furnished waiting area and an overall sense of calm seclusion. I requested a “Beard Shape and Shave” and sat down a bit nervously, not really knowing what to expect. Along with many of my peers, I had migrated to hair salons years earlier. The only barber shop I remembered was the one my father took me to in Montreal in the late 50’s. There I would perch on a booster seat while the barber administered “a short back and sides”. He’d then dust me off with a little talcum powder, lift me down and loudly call, “Next!” Dan began the beard shaping with the electric razors, punctuated by repeated blasts of warm air and applications of a soft talc-laden brush. He moved my head gently to get just the right angle and then applied yet another device to achieve just the right line. I relaxed. So when the chair tilted all the way back into the classic Sweeney Todd position and the warm towels, straight razor and shaving cream appeared, I felt not the slightest qualm. Later, when the towels were applied a second time, I thought the experience was over. However, Dan took a critical look at my hairy nose and ears. Warm wax was then applied to both, and my understanding of “grooming” took a sudden quantum leap forward. Later, as I strolled happily along the Danforth, newly enjoying its sounds and smells and resisting the impulse to invite strangers to look at my nose, I knew I would be returning to this comfortably secluded place – weekly for the beard and monthly for the wax job and a haircut. After all, it’s not just periodic plagues that shut us all down. Normal life does it all the time. Every once in a while, we need to reopen.

Danny and Will are so kind. I went to purchase a straight razor blade but they had none in stock. They graciously gave me one of their own and would accept no payment for it. Amazing to have this type of generosity in a small business.
