It's been a rough winter around here. I've been hiding at home, waiting for the world to change. Then, I wrote a short story that ended with the line, "The thing about storms is - they end." Well, if my storm is going to end, I need to get out into the sunshine. On a recent sunny day, I looked in the mirror and realized that I should get a haircut and stop looking like a neanderthal. Google Maps gave me a long list of options. The reviews talked about fantastic stylists, people great with kids or expertise with various types of hair. I don't have any style, I haven't been a kid for half a century and no one specializes in awkward bald spots. I just need a cut without any fuss and for a reasonable price. How about Great Clips? The salon is in a shopping area that I have been to before, but I have never noticed it tucked away on the edge with its own parking. There were no spots in front, so I parked in the next row over and prepared myself to wait in line for a while. I don't know where all the cars came from, because there was only one customer inside. A woman came over right away and typed all my information into a computer. Then, we went to her chair and I tried to describe the simple cut I was looking for. She asked a few questions and nodded her understanding of what I wanted. I'm not big on chatting while I get a haircut. There were a few polite questions that I answered briefly. She understood and went to work without finding out about my kids or what I was doing today. In a few minutes, I went from a scraggly caveman to a well groomed older man. She held up a mirror that I should have used to check the cut, but all I saw was my bald spot. Note to self - sit next to walls to show the hair I still have in front. I paid $33 including tip. Not cheap, but I'll get plenty of enjoyment from it.

I was pleased with my haircut. It was fast, possibly because I get it cut biweekly, and neat. I am in my 80th year and do not have a lot of hair and I expected there to be a senior discount but there was no mention of it. Is that an option in the Seattle area?

Absolutely amazing staff and hairstylists! I love my 2 main stylists here! They’re angels! I’ve been coming here with my family nearly 3 times a year for the last 5 years! I trust every single stylist in here, they’re all talented! Of course, you can’t expect Vidal Sassoon quality work, and I don’t say that as an insult, this franchise is built in a more UTILITARIAN kind of way, simple and clean haircuts at an affordable price. Pleasant staff that work efficiently! Producing consistent, predictable, and acceptable work. What more can you ask for at this price point? There are so many neurotic people that do not understand the tiers of hair salons, the types of haircuts that different salons are trained on, and how the product (your hair) is finished. This type of salon is not going to finish and style each haircut to resemble a random photo - that is a different service. You will get the basic shape cut into your hair - you need to learn to style your new haircut with the PRODUCTS required to do so. Still doesn’t look like the photo? What’s different? Your face shape? Your neck length? Your hair color? And yes, unfortunately, sometimes you will encounter a stylist who is either fresh out of beauty school, a stylist that doesn’t care, or a stylist that cares too much and accidentally gives you a cut you were not expecting. Mistakes, whether innocent or negligent, happen in every single industry and profession. Hairstylists just get a bad rap because they deal with a very important part of the body, so when a human worker makes an error just like any other human can in their job, they get every bit of anger thrown at them. You must also understand that all stylists, new or old, are also aware of the importance of their screw-ups and it weighs heavy on them. Be kind, express your dissatisfaction, but be kind

I showed up to this Greatclips ashamed of the state of my hair, due to breakage caused by myself. I was scared of judgement and dismissal of my ask to try and save the healthy hair I had left. I was so touched by the easy kindness and compassion I was met with, by a stylist whose name I am completely blanking on :( I was there Friday Dec 12th if that’s helpful at all. I was given so much great advice that was catered to my current tough financial situation. I was reassured that my hair wasn’t beyond help. All of my questions were answered patiently and gently. I wish I could have tipped more than I was able to, she was deserving of so much more. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness. Also, the cut I did get was incredible! Haha I almost didn’t notice she was cutting my hair during our conversation. I paid 4x what I paid here for my last cut from a bougie salon and was crying at the result in the chair. I left this greatclips confident, reassured, and esteemed.
