I honestly cannot recommend this salon enough, especially Fritz. I have been seeing him for almost six months now, and every single visit has been a great experience. The salon itself is welcoming, clean, calm, and professional, and you can tell there is a real emphasis on care, quality, and hair health rather than rushing clients in and out. At my most recent appointment, I came in with my hair matted and in serious disarray. I was embarrassed and nervous, but Fritz was nothing but kind, patient, and reassuring from the moment I sat down. He spent nearly three hours carefully and gently detangling my hair, taking his time to make sure it was done properly and without unnecessary breakage or pain. He helped bring my hair back to a healthy baseline, and never once made me feel judged or uncomfortable. Fritz is incredibly knowledgeable, talented, and thoughtful in his work, and it is very clear that he truly cares about his clients and the long-term health of their hair. His hairplay products are also amazing and actually make a noticeable difference. I trust his recommendations completely. If you are looking for a stylist who is patient, skilled, compassionate, and truly invested in what he does, and a salon that genuinely supports that level of care, this is the place. Fritz is the best, and I am so grateful to have found him and this salon.

Finding a salon in San Francisco that specializes in natural textured hair with curls and coils was a real challenge. But when I stepped into the salon, I was greeted with warm smiles and friendly encouragement. The staff was genuinely excited to work with my unique texture and make sure it was taken care of properly. I’ve now been going to HairPlay for 2 years, and my hair has retained moisture and length under Fritz’s care and guidance for my home routine. The owner, Fritz, is charming and insanely talented. He has his own product line, which he sells at the shop, and it’s a very versatile. His styling mousse works on wash n gos, twist out, blown out styles and even comes in travel sizes, which is so handy for when you’re leaving town or my gym bag. Additionally, I love how diverse both the stylists and the clientele is at the salon. It feels like there’s someone for everyone.

This place is an SF institution! I have been coming here for years now and have always experienced professional and awesome service!! I have thick curly hair and Marty does a wonderful job every time. He is very attentive and demonstrates a commitment to the small details. Love this place and love their SET hair product!! Only thing I use after conditioning to give the curls extra life :)

First time getting a curly cut in sf did not disappoint!! I booked a haircut with Marty and he did an amazing job with my thick curly hair. He was very attentive, took his time, and made sure my vision came to life through my hair. Not to mention the styling left my curls looking more defined and fluffy than they’ve ever looked. I highly recommend trusting your curls with hair play and Marty! Will be back soon! :)

This summer, I asked for caramels and blondes, and Fritz absolutely nailed it, he gave me the most beautiful blend of warm, sun-kissed tones that look natural, vibrant, and full of dimension. The service was excellent from start to finish. I also got a trim, and my hair feels lighter, healthier, and perfectly shaped. Fritz truly is a master of his craft, he knows exactly what your hair needs and takes the time to make sure it looks and feels its best. If you have hair goals, let him know! He'll help you work towards them with genuine care and expertise. My curls have never looked better, soft, bouncy, and full of life. I use Set 2 and Set 3, and they're hands-down the best products for keeping my hair soft, defined, and frizz-free. Every curl looks healthy and shiny.
